Historie kapely začíná v době, kdy spolu na Fairfax high school studovali Anthony Kiedis , Michael"Flea"Balzary a Hillel Slovak s Jackem Ironsem. Tato čtveřice se dala dohromady a založila skupinu Anthem, se kterou vystupovala v místních klubech. Poté kapela často měnila název, nejdříve na "What is this?", poté např. na "Tony Flow And The Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem" . V této době vznikla první píseň "Out in L.A.", kterou skupina hrála na koncertech, při kterých prováděla spoustu výstředních kousků jako zpívání v rouše Adamově s podkolenkami na... no na nohou je neměli :). To vyvolalo patřičný rozruch. Skupiny si všimla společnost EMI a nabídla skupině smlouvu. Slovak a Irons smlouvu nechtěli podepsat, protože už věnovali dost času projektu "What is this?" a skupinu tedy opustili.

Slovaka s Ironsem nahradili Jack Sherman (kytara) a Cliff Martinez (bicí). Skupina se finálně přejmenovala na Red Hot Chili Peppers a v roce 1984 natočila své první stejnojmenné album. Producentem byl Andy Gill. Mezitím se ale Hillel Slovak rozhodl vrátit k RHCP, protože "What is this?" nebyli příliš úspěšní. S producentem Georgem Clintonem skupina pak natočila druhé album "Freaky Styley"(1985). Toto album je ze všech asi nejvíce funkové.

Album však bylo stejně jako první neúspěšné. V tomto období se také začala zhoršovat Hillelova drogová závislost. Po turné během něhož skupina vystupovala také v Evropě, vznikla (už i s J. Ironsem, který se vrátil zpět) deska "Uplift Mofo Party Plan"(1987), kterou produkoval Michael Beinhorn. Album bylo o poznání úspěšnější než ta předchozí.

Skupina se pomalu začínala dostávat do podvědomí veřejnosti. V roce 1988 RHCP odjeli do Londýna, kde nafotili obal na EP Abbey Road. Obal paroduje slavné album Beatles- kapela přechází ulici, stejně jako Beatles, akorát, že všichni členové jsou nazí a mají opět pouze podkolenky. Zanedlouho po návratu z Londýna- 25.6.1988 umírá Hillel Slovak, který zkombinoval heroin s kokainem. To kapelu samozřejmě zasáhlo. Nejvíce tato událost zasáhla Jacka Ironse, který byl jeden čas dokonce na psychiatrii a skupinu opustil. V tuto dobu to s "Redhoty" vypadalo opravdu špatně a zdálo se, že se skupina rozpadne.

Po určité době se ale Anthony a Flea rozhodli dát kapelu opět dohromady. Přišli dva noví členové-mladý kytarista John Frusciante a bubeník Chad Smith. V této sestavě natočila skupina v roce 1989 album Mother´s Milk s obrovským hitem "Higher Ground". Producentem byl opět Michael Beinhorn. Album konečně dosáhlo i komerčního úspěchu.

Poté následovalo velké turné. Vznikly písně k filmům (Show Me Your Soul, Taste The Pain). Skupina v této době také přestoupila k Warner Bros. V roce 1991 vzniká v produkci Ricka Rubina (ten produkoval i všechny následující desky) album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, které pro kalifornskou čtveřici znamená obrovský úspěch. Album obsahovalo spoustu hitů- jmenujme např. Under The Bridge, Give It Away. Album v americké hitparádě vydrželo přes rok.

V roce 1992 na turné v Asii John Frusciante oznámil, že opouští skupinu. Na jeho místě se poté vystřídalo několik kytaristů (A.Marshall, J. Tobias). Až v roce 1994 přichází z kapely Jane´s Addiction Dave Navarro. S ním skupina v roce 1995 nahrála album One Hot Minute, které bylo trochu rockovější než ta předchozí. Přestože album obsahovalo hity jako Warped, Aeroplane nebo My Friends, nedosáhlo takového úspěchu jako Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Po dokončení alba kapela vyrazila opět na obrovské turné. Flea byl v roce 1996 prestižním časopisem "Bass Player" vyhlášen nejlepším baskytaristou roku. Skupinu v této době provázely různé problémy, Dave a Flea na chvíli odešli k Jane´s Addiction. Po určitém čase se ale kapela dala dohromady v sestavě, ve které natočila Blood Sugar Sex Magik a Mother´s Milk a za pouhé dva týdny (v roce 1999) natočila skvělé album Californication. Deska obsahuje spoustu skvělých písní jako Californication, Scar Tissue, Otherside nebo Road Trippin' a pro "Redhoty" znamená výtečný comeback.

V létě 2002 skupina vydává album By The Way, To je o poznání klidnější než předchozí počiny kapely a jsou na něm hity jako By The Way, Zephyr Song či Can't Stop. Album skupině pomáhá udržet se na vrcholu popularity.

Na konci roku skupina vydává kompilaci Greatest Hits, která obsahuje dva nové songy Fortune Faded a Save The Population. Také se začíná mluvit o novém řadovém albu. Doufejme, že nebudeme muset čekat takovou dobu jako třeba na Californication.
